You gotta love a good Internet meme frenzy sometimes. Starting on Facebook on June 27th, 2019, a couple users created the Facebook event “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us.” From there, the meme has taken on a life of its own. Over 1 million users have now confirmed their plans to participate, scheduled for September 20th. It’s a top tag on IMGUR. Twitter group Storm Area 51 has 6K followers. Elon Musk has weighed in, which is the threshold for crazy ideas reaching critical mass on the Internet.
The “plan” grows more ludicrous by the day, suggesting a line of participants be pumped up on energy drinks, and then everybody adopts the Leeroy Jenkins strategy at once, apparently. The original poster, Matty Roberts in California, has expressed regret at what he’s started now. It’s all fun and games until you realize some people take a joke too far. If you recall the Oregon standoff of 2016, this wouldn’t even be the first time US citizens have occupied government property.
So What Would Really Happen If We Stormed Area 51?

Now there’s supposed to be hotel rooms booked out there, so if you do drive out to it, I have the perfect first song for your mixtape:
