For your leery-eyed, lurid entertainment, we round up some of the historic ways kinky Catholics used to torture random women accused of witchcraft.

Since it didn’t make the cut in the article, I HAVE to rave about this TV commercial from the 1980s, Time-Life Books’ Enchanted World series, narrated by the Prince of Horror himself:

Real witches…” – You would not believe how much these commercials were pounded into your brain in the 1980s. They were inescapable. On every channel. All day, all night. You ran across copies at every used bookstore and every garage sale. If you found yourself stranded on a desert island, you could gather spare copies of the Enchanted World series to build a raft.

And always, these commercials had this impudent, condescending tone, like they were saying “Oh you don’t believe in ghosts? Ha ha, what a fool!” And then we wonder why people are so messed up now.
