I don't hate Microsoft - I just love freedom. Microsoft hates freedom. So we're enemies.

Passion for Windows: Does it Exist?

The title link is to the question posed by the OS Weakly Weekly title. And the answer is...

No as in Hell no. Sorry, passion for Windows is like passion for McDonald's. People eat there because it's convenient, not because they're raving fans of it.

I submit that Windows doesn't have a single voluntary customer. If all computers were sold bare naked, and you *had* to choose what operating system to put on it, then after making your choice you could give your reasons for choosing it. People use Windows because they didn't think of using anything else, or because they felt they had to.

I ask people why they use Windows all the time, and that's all I hear "I have to use what everybody else uses.", "It's the only system that everybody supports.", or "What's Windows? You mean operating systems come in different brands?"

I'm not kidding: ask your relatives or co-workers. People react to the idea of different operating systems like you told them the water that comes out of their faucet was a certain brand and they can switch. Some Windows-users even think their operating system is AOL or Explorer. I wouldn't be at all surprised if people thought Bill Gates invented the computer, the way Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb.

What I'd like to see is a survey done far away from the computer. Set up one of those form pad and cardboard box dealies at a restaurant or post office. Ask five basic questions, like:

  1. Who invented the computer?
  2. What does your computer run?
  3. What is the Internet?
  4. What is software?
  5. How is software made?

collect the results after a weekend, and blog the results. That's a meme if I ever saw one!
